ITR Filing Due Date Extended to 15th September 2025 for FY 2024-25

In a significant relief to taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, has officially extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Financial Year (FY) 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26). As per the press release issued on 27th May 2025, the original deadline of 31st July 2025 has now been extended to 15th September 2025.

Reason for Extension

The extension comes in light of the structural and content revisions introduced in the notified ITRs for AY 2025-26. These changes aim to:

• Simplify tax compliance
• Enhance transparency
• Enable more accurate reporting

However, the rollout of these revised ITR forms has required additional time for system development, integration, and testing of related utilities. Additionally, TDS credits, which are due by 31st May 2025, are expected to be reflected only in early June, thereby limiting the available time for accurate return filing.

System Readiness and Stakeholder Support

The CBDT has acknowledged the time needed for system readiness and the concerns raised by stakeholders. The extension to 15th September 2025 will help ensure:

• A smooth and convenient filing experience
• Sufficient time for taxpayers and professionals to adapt to the revised ITR utilities
• Accuracy and integrity in the filing process

What This Means for Taxpayers

This move offers much-needed relief to individual taxpayers, professionals, and businesses alike. Taxpayers are encouraged to utilize this additional time to ensure proper compliance and accurate filing, especially in view of the updated forms and reporting requirements.

A formal notification regarding this extension is expected to be issued shortly by the CBDT.
